EnergyQuarterly Feb 2010: Australian oil production in 2009 falls to lowest level in 40 years: major industry report
5th March 2010
Australian production of crude oil during 2009 dropped to its lowest level in four decades, according to a leading industry report card released today.
The report – by energy economics group, EnergyQuest – shows that oil production throughout the country fell 17% last year from 120.6 million barrels to 99.5 million barrels.
This is the lowest level since 1970.
The slump in oil production reflects the maturity of Australia’s major producing oil fields, together with disruptions due to maintenance and weather.
“The recent start-up of BHP Billiton’s Pyrenees oil field and Apache’s Van Gogh field – both situated off Western Australia’s north-west coast - will provide a boost in the short-term, however the long-term trend is for production to keep falling,” EnergyQuest Chief Executive Officer, Dr Graeme Bethune, said today.
Natural gas production grew strongly during the year. Total Australian natural gas production increased by 10.1 per cent in the 12 months to December 2009, reaching a record 1897 petajolues (PJ).

Record Australian 2008-09 gas production and reserves
1 September 2009
Australian natural gas production continues to perform strongly, hitting a new record
in the 12 months to June 2009, according to a leading industry report card.
The report – released today by energy economics group, EnergyQuest – also shows
that Australia’s gas reserves and resources are increasingly of global significance.
Total natural gas production in Australia increased by 4.8 per cent in the year to June
2009, reaching a record 1779 petajolues.
The growth was primarily due to increased exports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
from the North West Shelf in Western Australia.
Australia’s gas reserves and resources also continue to expand at a rapid rate.
EnergyQuest estimates that Australia’s natural gas reserves (proved, probable and
possible) and resources (best-estimate) now total over 200,000 PJ or 200 Trillion
Cubic Feet (TCF). more pdf 20KB

Australian oil and gas production continues to resist global downturn
3 June 2009
Australian oil and gas production is resisting the international downturn, continuing to
perform strongly for the second consecutive quarter, according to a leading industry
report card.

Higher oil and gas production
Total petroleum production in Australia increased 7.1 per cent in the March quarter
2009, compared with the previous corresponding period, March 2008.
BHP Billiton was Australia’s largest petroleum producer for the 12 months to 31
March, producing 87.7 million barrels of oil equivalent, 18.3 per cent of national
production.
Oil production spiked 4.8 per cent in the three months to 31 March 2009 to 27.6
million barrels.
“Oil production improved, driven by the start of production at the Vincent field and
significantly higher production from Enfield, both Woodside projects offshore Western
Australia,” EnergyQuest Chief Executive Officer, Dr Graeme Bethune, said today.
Total Australian natural gas production grew by 7.5 per cent for the quarter and
reached a record 1,732 petajoules (PJ) in the 12 months to 31 March, driven by
